About the event

Join us on Tuesday, April 21st, 2026, for a Prescribed Fire Field Day hosted by the River Breaks Prescribed Burn Association. This field day will consist of a morning classroom session providing an overview of how prescribed fire can be used as a land management tool, followed by an afternoon in-field session covering fire tools, equipment, and live-fire training during a prescribed burn.


The Intertribal Agriculture Council and its Natural Resources department is a proud sponsor of this field day that brings together a dynamic collaboration between the River Breaks Prescribed Burn Association, Pheasants Forever, South Dakota State University Extension, and The Nature Conservancy.


Field Day Information:

  • Lunch and drinks will be provided.

    Personal water bottles or other forms of hydration are permitted.

  • SAFETY: We are the guests of our hosts. Please remember that we are conducting this school on private land. Treat the land accordingly. Also, please ensure your personal safety at all times and adhere to instructions from instructors and our hosts regarding vehicle use and site access.

  • WEATHER: If the weather is not conducive to burning, we will proceed with training and demonstrations in the field, showing appropriate techniques for firebreak installation, topography, accomplishing burn objectives, safety, water use, hand tools, etc.

  • We will provide

    • Nomex (fire-resistant) over-shirt, eye protection if needed, fire helmet.

    • All borrowed gear must be returned

    • Radio

    • Drinking water

  • Required clothing and gear:

    • Leather boots, heavy soles. Basically, a good work boot. No neoprene, no plastic or canvas. No tennis shoes or light hiking boots.

    • Cotton-based pants. Blue jeans/denim / all cotton khakis or similar. No jeans with stretchy material. (No polyester or nylon leggings. No skinny jeans.)

    • Cotton shirt / T-shirt/undershirt. No fake materials. We will provide a fire-resistant long-sleeved shirt.

    • Eye protection: bring your own sunglasses, or we will provide safety glasses.

    • Leather gloves. Must be all leather. No mechanics' gloves or cloth gloves of any kind. No cotton ‘chore’ gloves

    • Personal care products. sunscreen, etc.

    • Warm jacket. Gloves, stocking cap
